Eleanor Marjorie Gilroy

I am a molecular plant pathologist by training. I love trying to communicate the complexity, the challenges and novelty of how scientists find methods to try protect us and our crops from pests and pathogens in the best ways for now and our future. Currently I am focused on studying oomycetes and the proteins that enter the host plant and manipulate plant pathways to cause disease. This has unveiled a number of unusual ways that pathogens trick the plant into doing what they want.

Skills and experience

  • Institution: The James Hutton Institute
  • Current position: PI

I am a molecular plant pathologist who loves telling people that plants get sick too and how scientists find solutions to help us produce safe food. I have developed/run classroom activities for Secondary school ages on plant disease resistance and developed a science centre exhibit and resources for teachers. I also enjoy and help to coordinate knowledge exchange events run through our Institute and at other local community groups in Angus, Fife and Tayside.
