Is the history of flooding at York representative of UK and European flood trends?

Instrumental river flow series rarely extend much beyond 60 years in length, but historical records permit a much longer-term analysis of flooding. Historic settlements such as York provide a valuable insight, not just into the size and extent of floods, but also into date and timing, damage, impacts, responses and flood generating mechanisms.
