Bad Airs, Agues and Fevers – John Eliot Howard FRS, quinine and the battle against malaria

Our exhibition charts the fascinating story of pioneering Tottenham chemist John Eliot Howard FRS (1807-1883). His scientific discoveries about the Peruvian bark 'cinchona' and its medicinal derivative quinine were pivotal in the fight against malaria. As a chemist in the family firm Howard and Sons alongside his father Luke Howard FRS - the eminent scientist and meteorologist - the family manufactured quinine. It became the company's most successful product in the 1800s. Open Weds-Sun 1-5pm
