Exploring the Deep Sea

After almost 150 years of exploration and research we understand it is deep, dark and definitely different; but there remain large gaps in our knowledge that hinder progress in sustainable management of this vast system. New technology – from manned submersibles, to satellite measurements, acoustic systems, and artificial intelligence – key to future research, and the next ten years will deliver a new age of deep-sea science

Speakers

Professor Kerry Howell is Deputy Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Marine Biology and Oceanography at the University of Plymouth. She is also an active academic researcher working on various topics related to conservation and sustainable management of the deep sea and high seas, and marine habitat mapping. From an academic perspective Kerry’s research is focused on understanding biodiversity patterns in the deep sea.
