An overview of Sirius Minerals North Yorkshire polyhalite project: opportunities and engineering challenges

Sirius Minerals aim to become one of the world’s largest producers of multi-nutrient fertilisers through the development of its project in North Yorkshire, which is currently two years into construction. The project will involve extracting polyhalite via two 1,600 metre deep shafts at Woodsmith Mine, near Whitby, and transporting it on a conveyor system in a 23-mile tunnel to Teesside where the polyhalite will be granulated and exported from a new harbour facility to a growing global market.
